Contemplative Studies @ Brown

“The faculty of voluntarily bringing back a wandering attention, over and over again, is the very root of judgment, character, and will… An education which should improve this faculty would be the education par excellence.”

– William James, The Principles of Psychology, (1890), p.463

The Contemplative Studies Initiative is a group of Brown faculty with diverse academic specializations who are united around a common interest in studying the underlying philosophy, psychology, and phenomenology of contemplative experience, across time, cultures and traditions.

We have developed a multidisciplinary curriculum of courses in three major areas of Contemplative Studies: Sciences, Humanities, and the Creative Arts. Many of these courses follow the principles of Integrated Contemplative Pedagogy, a teaching method that combines traditional third-person academic approaches with critical first-person approaches. Students who wish to create their concentration in Contemplative Studies take a group of core courses as they pursue a focused program of study in one of these three areas through an Independent Concentration.
